CD And DVD writers are computer devices that copy data onto a blank CD or DVD disc, they come in two different types which are the internal and the external writer. An internal CD or DVD writer must be installed into your computer which can be quite complex, you will need a spare drive bay in your computer which is where the writer will be placed and you will also need a spare IDE connector and power connector for the writer to use. If you are not used to installing computer components then it is best to have the writer fitted or get an external writer, external writers are not installed inside your computer but are a separate piece of computer equipment like a printer or scanner. The external writer is attached to the computer using a USB wire, external writers are much easier to install but take up more space and are not as cheap. There are two types of writer available, the CD writer and the DVD writer. CD writers can only copy onto CD's but most DVD writers can write onto DVD's and CD's, for this reason it is probably best to get a DVD writer as they are still cheap and they write onto both formats.

With the blank media used in CD or DVD writers there are also two types of blank disc available, there are the discs that are only writeable (CD-R and DVD-R) and the discs that are re-writeable (CD-RW and DVD-RW). The blank discs that are re-writeable are capable of having data copied to them several times, there is no limit to the amount of times you can delete data or copy data to the blank disc. The writeable blank discs can only be copied to once, this means once you have copied something onto the blank disc then you cannot change what is on the disc. Most CD and DVD writers are capable of copying onto re-writeable discs so this feature is more important when choosing your blank discs, the writeable discs are a little cheaper but if you want to copy onto the disc several times then the re-writeable discs are much better.

The speed of the CD or DVD writer is also important, the speed is an indication of how quickly the writer will copy the data to the disc. The speed of computer CD and DVD drives is measured in comparison to a standard CD drive, a typical speed would be 52x which means that the drive is 52 times faster than a standard CD drive. Writers usually have separate speeds for the three common operations, reading, writing and re-writing. With writers the speed determines how much quicker the data will copy onto the blank disc so if you were to copy a music CD with 32 minutes worth of data using a CD writer with a speed of 32x then the writing would be done in one minute. The speeds of writers vary with the DVD writers generally being slower, the blank media also has an impact on this as they usually have a maximum write speed so check that if you are buying a very fast writer.

A buffer is also an important thing to look for when buying a CD or DVD writer, the buffer holds data that is to be copied onto the blank disc so that if there is an error reading the source disc then the buffer takes over so that the writing operation does not need to be interrupted. While the data is being copied from the buffer to the black disc the other drive can attempt to read the source disc again and then continue copying as normal, if there were no buffer then the writer would more than likely have an error and your writing session would be over (if you were not using a re-writeable disc the disc would be wasted). So having a writer with a buffer can help prevent errors, also always make sure that the source disc is clean when attempting to copy it.

So when buying a CD or DVD writer there are lots of things to consider, the first is whether you go for an internal or external writer. Then you have to choose between a CD or DVD writer, CD writers are a little cheaper but most DVD writers can copy CD's and DVD's. Most writers can handle re-writeable discs so that is worth considering, these are stated as CD-RW and DVD-RW and can be copied onto an unlimited amount of times.
